309L stainless steel electrodes are 24% chromium and 13% nickel filler which is the same as 309, except for the reduced carbon amount. Low carbon alloys reduce the possibility of inter-granular carbide precipitation while providing a good crack resistance. These all-position rods have easy strike and re-strike with spatter-free arc, self-releasing slag leaving a smooth bead appearance to slightly concave/flat. 309L electrodes may also be a good choice when welding stainless to carbon steels. 309L has a wider welding current range and may be used in all-position however with the slower freezing slag care should be used out of position but in flat and horizontal yields a smooth arc transfer. Slight weave may be needed for vertical up
